While the app does ask permission to use the microphone, this may be a setting you want to set up in advance of having your child play. There is the option to record in Toca Life World, capturing not only what’s happening on-screen, but also the players voice so they can narrate a story. Like all Toca Boca apps, this is an open-ended play experience where kids can customize different characters in fun locations.
While this can be turned off by parents, we found it to be quite a lot of promotion to buy more, particularly as the cart icon is everpresent. There are also multiple promotions of the other Toca Boca apps. There are multiple in-app purchases, all based on expanding the world and its inhabitants. The app comes pre-loaded with 8 locations and 39 characters, which we found to be an ample starter pack for new players starting their storytelling journey in the Toca Life world.
